First introduced in 1842, the cyanotype process is among the earliest photographic techniques to be developed in the modern era. Created using a mixture of ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferricyanide, the image appears after the light sensitive paper (or other substrate) is exposed to ultraviolet light and developed in water. The alluring contrast between the brilliant white of the image set against a deep background of Prussian blue has enabled the medium to endure for over 180 years.
Much of my work is an investigation into the materials used in celebration, ritual, play, and commemoration. I look to memorialize what is often used or consumed in performative gesture when we demarcate our lives through embellishment.
